Reading

Here at Forton Primary School, it is our intention to inspire children to develop a passion of reading, unlocking the door to all future learning. This will enable our children to fluently communicate ideas and emotions both verbally and in reading.

Phonics

We plan and deliver our phonics lessons following the Lancashire Red Rose Letters and Sounds Phonics Programme. The intent behind Red Rose Letters and Sounds is to provide a rigorous and thorough planning programme in order to strengthen the teaching and learning of phonics, and ensure children become enthusiastic and successful readers and writers. We use relevant and specific intervention programmes for those children who require further support when reading.

Reading

Our pupils progress through a range of quality texts that are ordered in phonetically appropriate stages for children who are learning their phonetic code. We use texts from Oxford Reading Scheme, TTS, Collins Big Cat, Song Birds and Bug Club, as well as some others. The reading scheme changes to a book banded system once they have learnt to read using the phonetic code.
